Google Book Search has full-page scans of New York magazine, circa 1968-1997. They've certainly had a consistent editorial vision over the years.

Excellent find. I gave up our New York Magazine subscription about five or so years ago. I think I'd prefer the back issues anyway.... Hope it's keyword searchable. Also, nice post on the look-out hounds.

Unfortunately, I got pretty unsatisfactory results with the keyword search feature.
