What would a New Orleans debutante wear?

"Even the debutantes would rather look pretty than smart. Given their choice of Clare Potter or Tina Leser they will pick a Tina Leser any day."
(via Google Books)

So says Eleanor Early in New Orleans Holiday (Rinehart, 1947, via Google Book Search).

Centurions in the epic battle between Pretty and Smart:

Tina Leser via Blue Velvet Vintage:

Clare Potter via DRESS:

Lately I've come to regret that "smart" has fallen into disuse as a description of appearance. Doesn't anyone belong to the "smart set" anymore?

My first impulse was to think that I, too, wanted the "pretty." I slept on it and realized that the Clare Potter dress is more age appropriate for me. My body type, however, doesn't seem to lend itself as easily to the smart set. That seam right across the muffin top region wouldn't work for me.

I love them both for different reasons. I'll take both. Why not be smart and pretty?
